- Position: Locum Medical Officer
- Introduction
- A vacancy exists for a Locum Rehabilitation Medical Officer at Life Eugene Marais Rehabilitation Centre, reporting to Phillipa Morris, the Rehab Practice Manager. The overall purpose of this challenging position is to provide clinical services at the rehabilitation unit. Life Eugene Marais Rehabilitation Unit is part of an expanding network of rehabilitation units within Life Healthcare.
The successful candidate will be required to relieve our resident full-time doctor (alongside 1 or 2 other locums on rotation) by covering approximately 2 weekends per month, 6 public holidays per year as well as the doctor’s annual leave and sick leave as it arises. The locum doctor may also be called upon while off duty to provide sick notes, temporary disability forms and death certificates where applicable.
- Critical Outputs

- Clinical assessment and daily management of 21 in-patients
- After hours telephonic on-call support and physically available in case of complications
- A trauma doctor is available for resuscitation and emergency but the locum is required to assist with further management and transfer of the patient when needed
- Participation in family meetings and team goal setting and rehab plan review meetings as required
- Accurate record keeping and compiling of patient reports to funders and referring doctors
- Promote and maintain sound and productive relationships with doctors and stakeholders in the field of Rehabilitation.
- Contribute toward unit culture, which promotes business objectives, a performance / results orientation, customer focus and teamwork.
- Monitor the service provided and ensure a high-level service delivery by staff.
- Participate in the development and implementation of new clinical services / products.

- Requirements
-
- An MBBCH and current HPCSA registration as medical doctor as well as CPD compliance
- Current ACLS is an advantage
- 3-5 yrs post comm serve hospital-based clinical experience: acute rehabilitation, neurology, orthopaedics, internal medicine and emergency medicine will be an advantage
- Ability to work independently, without supervision
- Confident in responding to patients who complicate including but not limited to management of pulmonary emboli, stridor, dysphagia, dislodged PEG tube, tracheostomy tubes and autonomic dysreflexia
- Knowledge and experience in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of HAIs
- Experience in leading a team of professionals and successfully providing clinical supervision to professionals will be an advantage
- Excellent interpersonal skills are important for the position as well as a willingness to engage with family members and caregivers of the patient
